Columbia Open House is next Thursday, August 4 @6 p.m.-7 p.m. We want to gather to learn about our new school year while sharing a hot dog supper, and we need your help. Happening today: FBI, Local Law Enforcement Host ‘Safety in Our Schools: A Conversation with Parents’ — District-organized conversation addresses safety, threat aversion. As the start of a new school year gets underway, administrators at Las Cruces Public Schools, together with local and federal law enforcement, will provide an opportunity for parents to hear about current training and safety plans aimed at mitigating potential threats on Wednesday, July 27 at 6 p.m. The meeting, hosted by LCPS and the City of Las Cruces, will include information from the FBI and the Las Cruces Police Department. “Following the horrific news in Uvalde, school safety is on everyone’s mind,” said LCPS Superintendent Ralph Ramos. “This informational meeting is an opportunity for parents to hear from law enforcement and gain a better understanding of how we train and equip our schools to be as prepared as we possibly can for any potential threat.” Agents with the Albuquerque Field Office of the FBI will be opening the agenda on Wednesday, followed by remarks from Superintendent Ramos and Las Cruces Police Chief Miguel Dominguez. Training officers with LCPD will walk parents through certain scenarios related to active shooter training and protocols that would be followed in the event something similar happened in Las Cruces. “We hope law enforcement never has an opportunity to put this training to use in real life,” noted Ramos. “But not being prepared is not an option. In addition to our work with law enforcement, we will continue to stress the importance of situational awareness in our schools. Our students are always reminded to report suspicious behavior to a responsible adult and do their part to ensure a safe learning environment for all students and staff.” Safety in Our Schools: A Conversation With Parents will be hosted inside the Las Cruces City Council Chambers on Wednesday, July 27 from 6 to 7 p.m. The meeting is open to LCPS parents and members of the public as space permits. Kindergarten parents are invited to join the principals in the commons after you drop off your child for their first day of school for our Boo Hoo Breakfast (coffee and donuts) at 8:00 a.m. in the commons. This will be a great time to connect with other Kindergarten parents and meet some of the great Columbia staff as we kick off this new school year.

Wednesday, July 21 is the first day for Kindergarten students and the day everyone else gets to meet their teachers. We are so excited to get this new year started! School starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. for all our new kinders. Meet and greet for our 1st-5th grade students runs from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30. Come meet your teachers, see your classroom, and get all the information you need to start the year off right. Please don't park in the bus lanes. Thank you.

LAS CRUCES PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICE OFFERING BACK-TO-SCHOOL IMMUNIZATIONS JULY 1ST THROUGH AUGUST 31ST The immunization clinic is open to the public and immunizations will be administered at no cost for children 18 years old and younger. Whiptail Trails Club—Girls Summer Camp Application: The Whiptail Trails Club is a program that empowers seventh-graders in the greater Las Cruces area to learn about Southern New Mexico Public Lands. During the week-long camp, 15 girls will get to visit White Sands National Park, Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, the Lincoln National Forest, and more (free of charge!) This camp is made possible through a collaboration by the Bureau of Land Management, the Public Lands Interpretive Association, and Conservation Corps New Mexico. DEPICT Summer Program for HS students starts June 6-17. Interested in doing more with Creative Writing, Performance Arts, and Computer Science? Join the DEPICT team and be the creator of new technologies! Applicants must be rising into 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, submit an online application, be in good academic standing, and able to attend camp every day. Preference will be given to student who took creative writing this school year at Las Cruces and Organ Mountains High School. This camp provides a broad foundation for computer science, to empower our area high school students in CS and computational thinking. This camp is not geared towards advanced students in computer science. Summer stipends ($$$) will be provided to accepted participants, who attend camp every day and participate in the camp activities. Lunch and all supplies will be provided.
